Technically, most people who see this at the first glance would say they went too far.
However, I wouldn't put all the blame on the guards, seeing that Singapore alone had 4 recent deaths of NS men during their 2-year training, either dying of heart attacks from intensive training or using drowning techniques to induce fear into the rookie...unsuccessfully.
If you were fit and not a couch-potato addicted to fantasy, then this problem with the guards would probably not even happen. He could have easily died from a heart attack even if was not beaten to death like that example. I'm not surprised that higher authorities use force to initimidate them to work harder, but they abused their power like the drowning incident we had. Both the victim and mostly the guards are to blame, but no man should be killed, no matter how hated he/she is...unless you are George Bush :hehehe:
